Free Items To Give Away

Can you give away a copyrighted video with another item you sell. If you make it clear that the video is free
Here is the deal. I have a sports video tape that I am sure is copyrighted somewhere along the way. I think I could get bookoo bucks for this if I sold it. However, i do not want to end up Bubba’s roommate at the State Pen! If I sell another item and give the video away free is that breaking copyright law? Any help would be appreciated
If you have a bootleg or other illegal video, it is illegal to disseminate, distribute, or otherwise transfer the video. Period. Even if not for profit. Giving it away as part of another sale is also not allowed. The best thing to do would be to get rid of it.
If it is a legal video that you are the owner of, you can simply resell the original, just like you would sell a used book.

Give It Up! $9.99 “Would it be possible to live without the designer coffee, the Kate Spade Bags, the technology that was a part of my every day existence? Could stripping away some of those items and habits make me a appreciate what I was so fortunate to have? I created a plan. Each month for one year, I would choose one of my favorite things and give it up cold turkey for one month. This would become my year to live better with less.” Giving It Up approaches the self–improvement, makeover trends from a new angle: improving ourselves from the inside out. For one month each, Mary Carlomagno gives up alcohol, shopping, elevators, newspapers, cell phones, dining out, television, taxis, coffee, cursing, chocolate, and multi–tasking. In doing so, she gains a deeper appreciation for what she has, and for the world around her. Giving It Up is a wake up call to think, to understand, and to enjoy the lives that we live. |

Give $5.58 Falling somewhere between Medeski, Martin & Wood, Ben Folds Five, and the Oscar Peterson Trio, power jazz trio the Bad Plus deliver more idiosyncratic instrumentals on their sophomore effort, Give. Featuring bassist Reid Anderson, drummer David King, and pianist Ethan Iverson, the Bad Plus follow a similar creative path as on their debut, These Are the Vistas, by interspersing original compositions with covers of popular rock tunes. This time around the Pixies’ “Velouria” is turned into a kind of Sergei Rachmaninov does funk jazz number while Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” sounds something like a Claude Debussy arrangement of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.” Otherwise, the trio evinces free jazz with Ornette Coleman’s “Street Woman,” and does a bombastic impersonation of Vince Guaraldi on the original “Layin’ a Strip for the Higher-Self State Line.” While obviously talented and often inspired, it is unclear if the Bad Plus are avant-garde enough to appeal to hardcore jazz fans, or pop-oriented enough to grab the attention of rock listeners. However, fans of quirky, experimental music may find this worth a listen. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi |

Collectors’ Items $7.17 Collectors’ Items is an O’Jays compilation with a narrow range (basically 1972-76), a contradictory title, and odd sequencing, but a parade of huge hits that make up for any of its other faults. Using two LPs (or one CD, in its digital incarnation) to collect songs from only six albums, the set has plenty of room to anthologize all of the smooth Philly soul trio’s biggest singles from the early- to mid-’70s: “Love Train,” “Back Stabbers,” “I Love Music,” “Give the People What They Want,” “Livin’ for the Weekend.” Even though all of the songs that had to be here are here, a few bizarre choices make this less than the definitive compilation of their time: why take “Sunshine” from 1972′s Back Stabbers, but not the far superior “Time to Get Down” or “992 Arguments” (or both)? Why use “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby (Sweet Tender Love)” from 1976′s Message in Our Music, but not the gorgeous title track? These few questionable decisions aside, Collectors’ Items delivers exactly what fans expect, and there is actually one item for the collectors: a previously unreleased cover of “Wildflower,” a recent hit for the Canadian group Skylark as well as the New Birth. ~ John Bush, Rovi |

A Heartbeat Away $9.99 The New York Times bestselling author and master of suspense delivers another novel at the crossroads of politics and medicine in this shocker of a thriller On the night of the State of the Union address, President James Allaire expects to give the speech of his career. But no one anticipates the terrifying turn of events that forces him to quarantine everyone in the Capitol building. A terrorist group calling itself “Genesis” has unleashed WRX3883, a deadly, highly contagious virus, into the building. No one fully knows the deadly effect of the germ except for the team responsible for its development—a team headed by Allaire, himself. The only one who might be able to help is virologist Griffin Rhodes, currently in solitary confinement in a maximum security federal prison for alleged terrorist acts, including the attempted theft of WRX3883 from the lab where he worked. Rhodes has no idea why he has been arrested, but when Allaire offers to free him in exchange for his help combating the virus, he reluctantly agrees to do what he can to support the government that has imprisoned him without apparent cause. Meanwhile, every single person in line for presidential succession is trapped inside the Capitol—every person except one: the Director of Homeland Security, who is safely at home in Minnesota, having been selected as the “Designated Survivor” for this event. With enemies both named and unnamed closing in, and the security of the nation at stake, Griff must unravel the mysteries of WRX3883 without violating his pledge as a scientist to use no animal testing in his experiments…and time is running out. Tense, thrilling, and entirely plausible, A Heartbeat Away will make you reflect, wonder, and be truly afraid. |

10 Items or Less $12.73 An aging Hollywood icon whose fear of failure has caused his once-luminous star to smoulder strikes up an unlikely friendship with an acid-tongued checkout clerk while researching his latest role in City of Angels and Moonlight Mile director Brad Silberling’s intimate drama. Crippled by his own all-consuming fears, the man who was once Hollywood’s hottest icon (Morgan Freeman) is forced to consider a role in a low-budget independent after a series of more lucrative prospects wither away on the vine. When his driver abandons him during a trip to Carson to research his upcoming role, the onetime showbiz supernova strikes up a lively conversation with Scarlet (Paz Vega), an outspoken check-out girl at a Latino community market. Now, stuck on his own, far from Brentwood, the actor must rely upon the kindness of a common stranger to help him get back on his feet. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi shadowed her while she finishes her errands for the day. Freeman draws some well-observed comic material from the fish-out-of-water situations his character finds himself in, and Silberling proves his low-budget directorial chops after working on a number of bigger projects. 10 ITEMS OR LESS is a slight piece, coming in around the 80-minute mark, but the interplay between Freeman and Vega really makes the film, with the two actors finding a meaningful balance in the serious and amusing material Silberling has written for them. While Freeman’s work is typical of the high quality expected of him, Vega is a revelation. Her feisty, occasionally downtrodden, and remarkably beautiful interpretation of Scarlet provides a strong indication of her potential as an actress, and bigger things will surely follow. |
